International students at Evergreen College or those intending to join should pay attention to some important news. The Canadian Government, through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), has made changes in terms of study permit requirements. These changes have been made for the purpose of ensuring international students are fully prepared for life in Canada.

From January 1, 2024, the financial requirement for living costs for study permit applicants will increase. The new requirement for single applicants will be CA$20,635, in addition to the first year’s tuition and travel expenses. This adjustment is set at 75% of the Low-Income Cut-Off (LICO) and thus helps them comfortably manage their cost of living in Canada.

The financial requirement will be reviewed and adjusted yearly based on the LICO updates by Statistics Canada. This annual adjustment ensures international students; financial needs align with the cost of living changes. “International students provide significant cultural, social, and economic benefits to their communities, but they have also faced challenges navigating life in Canada,” said Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, in a press release. Miller says the adjustment reflects Canada’s true cost of living and protects international students from being financially vulnerable.

The waiver extension for international students to work beyond 20 hours during classes has now been extended until April 30, 2024. This means that students already in Canada or who have submitted their application for a study permit by December 7, 2023, can work outside the school premises for even more than 20 hours weekly until April 30, 2024. Consequently, it gives them an excellent opportunity to balance their finances and gain work experience.
