Canada is undergoing a significant shift in enrolment. In 2010, domestic students represented 92% of total enrolments— by 2020, they only made up 81%, according to Statistics Canada. This decline was more considerable among STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) than in BHASE (business, humanities, arts, social science, education).

Conversely, international student enrolments have increased from 142,170 in 2010 to 388,782 in 2020. This growth, representing a jump from 7.2% to 17.8% of total registrations, occurred across STEM and BHASE fields.

This data exemplifies Canada as a top choice for international students. In Ontario, the number of international students doubled from 2015-2020, from 96,492 to 192,906, with an average annual growth rate of about 19%. Ontario’s international student growth surpassed all other provinces and remains the most sought-after province to study.
