Carla Patricia Carpio’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and hard work. Carpio faced numerous challenges on her journey. Despite the obstacles, she never lost sight of her vision. And with the help of Evergreen College, she was able to improve her career and work towards her dreams.
“I’m just happy and proud that Evergreen College helps me to improve and develop my career,” Carpio said.
After receiving her bachelor’s degree in Nursing in 2010, she volunteered with the Red Cross to assist with medical missions in the Philippines. She then moved to the Middle East as a healthcare aide and worked in Dubai, Oman, and Abu Dhabi. After this, with the help of her mother, she migrated to Canada under a 2-year work contract as a live-in caregiver.
She was assisting a resident with dementia and cancer and found it was a pretty challenging experience. When her resident passed away, Carpio had nowhere to stay. She lived in a shelter and relied on food banks to get by. It was determined that her previous employer had been abusing her in hours and salary, and she was given the opportunity to study the Personal Support Worker (PSW) program at Evergreen College.
Despite her previous difficulties, she worked hard and passed all her exams with flying colours. Carpio was even awarded the Leadership Award from the Filipino Canadian Nurses Association for her efforts. Carla is currently a Registered Nurse, has a Part-time job as a Clinical Supervisor at Evergreen.
Carpio never gave up on her dreams and used her experiences to inspire others. During her valedictorian speech, Carpio shared her story with fellow graduates, encouraging them to keep going no matter how difficult the path to success may be, adding, “I truly believe that if you want to be powerful, you have to educate yourself.”
Her message is a reminder that with determination, the proper education, and support, anyone can achieve their goals.
