The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Tenzin Dechen is one of Evergreen College’s newest graduates.
And her mother? She is an alumni.
Tenzin, who recently graduated from the Medical Office Administrator (MOA) diploma program says her
mother was able to obtain a great job in her field thanks to her career-focused education from
Evergreen. She also played a key role in not only introducing Tenzin to the college, but connecting her to
an admissions counsellor.
Below, Tenzin shares her Evergreen experience and her path towards career success.
How did you hear about Evergreen College?
I heard about Evergreen College from my mom. She was a Personal Support Worker (PSW) student at
Evergreen and she had a wonderful experience there. She was able to get a great job thanks to her
education at Evergreen.
Why did you choose to study at Evergreen?
I chose Evergreen because of my mom. She introduced the college to me and told me about all the
different programs they have, the downtown location, and how multicultural and career-focused the
college is. She connected me with Lily the admissions counsellor. Although my mom introduced me to
Evergreen, my decision was based on my meeting with Lily. Lily was so helpful, kind and informative, she
was able to connect with me on personal level. Lily’s first impression made me want to join Evergreen
College.
What was the best part about studying at Evergreen?
The best part about studying at Evergreen was my professor Linda Cook, my classmates and the staff. I
also really enjoyed the celebratory events at school such as Diversity Day, Canada Day, E-Factor Talent
Show where every class got the chance to participate.
What was the most important thing you learned at Evergreen?
Studying at Evergreen made me realize how important it is to have the passion and enthusiasm to learn
and that it really helps you gain inner confidence and reach for the greatest things in life.
What career do you hope to pursue after graduation?
I hope to continue working in the Medical Office Administration field in hospitals and large clinics. After
obtaining a solid amount of experience working in the Medical Administration field, I hope to pursue a
career in Health Management.
How did Evergreen prepare you for this career?
My Professor Linda Cook would always advise us to be the best in the work field. She would always
make sure we are accurate, professional and precise in whatever we do in class. Every course module

that were taught in class played a huge role in expanding my knowledge, enhancing my skills and
polishing my attitude. The more knowledge I gained at Evergreen, the more confident and enthusiastic I
became.
We also had career workshops taught by Evangeline Miliotis, I learned so much from those workshops. I
learned how to look for jobs using effective keywords, build and create professional resumes and cover
letters, and the do’s and don’ts of interview behaviour such as dress code, body language, attitude etc. I
also learned how important it is to send thank-you emails after interviews.
Were you hired in your field upon graduation?
Yes. I recently got a job as a Medical Office Assistant at a medical clinic. I also have couple of interviews
for another employer soon. I am always applying for jobs through Indeed.
What advice do you have for new students in your field?
My advice for the new students in my field would be to not be afraid to ask questions and express how
you feel. The more you ask, the more you learn. I’d also like to advise that enthusiasm and passion for
learning is key in this field. If you have the passion for working in the Medical administration field, the
program has so much to offer you.
The knowledge and practical skills you gain, expands your knowledge and skills to greater strengths.
With interpersonal skills playing a huge role in working as a MOA, it teaches you to be organized, detail-
oriented, productive and sharp minded in life and at the workplace. Everything I learned in the MOA
program at Evergreen, I see myself applying them to different aspects of my life.
