Have you ever heard the saying, “A goal without a deadline is just a dream?”
Before we can talk about goal-setting, it’s important to look at what actually makes up a goal,
and what makes it something realistic that we can achieve as students.
It is easy to achieve our goal when we narrow it down into smaller steps that are more specific.
As students, we’ll often say our goal is to become a doctor, professor, scientist or artist, but
we’re often not specific about what type of doctor or what type of scientist we want to be.
Being as specific as possible is the most important factor in goal setting. This helps you to plan
each exact step on the path to get there.
Heaving a dream without a plan can often lead to a fairy tale lifestyle where we envision great
things for ourselves but don’t develop an action plan to achieve them.
As part of this plan, it’s important to do your research about how you’ll get where you’re
intending to go. So if you know you want to be a specific type of doctor, you need to look into
all the studies, courses and exams that are required to get there.
Each one of these steps can be broken down into smaller goals that will ultimately help you to
achieve the bigger picture in a defined time period. Without putting a deadline on each
individual step, you won’t give yourself a schedule to adhere to.
To become superstar when working on your goal-setting, remember that creating a realistic
and measurable plan is essential in determining what, how and when you plan to achieve each
milestone. Because ultimately, goals are simply dreams unless they are specific, realistic and
achievable.
